OUR

STORY

While working at the Union Gospel Mission, Gary Schroeder noticed a gap for men who had completed drug and alcohol recovery programs and independent living. To bridge this gap, he thought of transitional housing that would provide affordable accommodation, accountability and independence. Sanctuary Homes became an established non-profit Christian organization in 2009 and in March of 2012, after praying and preparation, a 4-bedroom house in St. Paul was purchased. By August of 2012, all 4 rooms were filled with residents. There have been weekly breakfasts and Bible studies held for the residents to provide spiritual encouragement and build positive relationships, which continues to this day. Over the years, more than eleven men have lived at Sanctuary Homes and seven have transitioned to their next stage in life. Sanctuary Homes has blessed many lives and will continue to do so for years to come.

I was one of four men fortunate enough to be in the first group of residents at Sanctuary Homes. Gary proposed the idea of Sanctuary Homes to me while I was a supervisor in his Discipleship Program at the Union Gospel Mission. As God had placed the dream of such a home in my heart, I was eager to accept the opportunity to live there and I felt I thrived in that environment as many others have. Our weekly Bible studies kept me on track and led me to a life in Christ.

While at Sanctuary Homes, I was free to study for a career as a Christian Counselor at Liberty University online. I successfully completed my Master’s Degree with specialties in Human Services Counseling, as well as Crisis and Trauma. I am a Platinum Member of the American Association of Christian Counselors. My time at Sanctuary Homes put me on a path that I will forever be grateful.
